Weapons Data Researcher

Employer: Action on Armed Violence
Closing date: 06 Nov 2015
£20,000 a year – initial 6 month contract with an eye to long term extension.

Working in AOAV’s weapons team, the researcher will be primarily responsible for the day-to-day running of AOAV’s data collation on the impacts of armed violence worldwide, including the Explosive Violence Monitoring Project.

This junior researcher role will involve compiling reports on the use of certain weapons and the recorded fatalities and injuries incurred by such use. Such a role would only suit candidates with a strong eye for detail, a passion for data and a quizzical eye when it comes to source reliability and accuracy. This role would not suit anyone expecting to do field work or other more direct forms of humanitarian research.

The researcher will also help with the development of advocacy materials based on the data, including writing responsive news stories for AOAV’s website. The Research Assistant will also help disseminate the collated data via social media and direct contact with journalists and other media.

They will also be expected to help develop a range of publications and advocacy material to tackle the worst impacts of armed violence on civilians around the world.

Responsibilities
Running AOAV armed violence monitoring datasets, including the Explosive Violence Monitoring Project.
Coding and analysing data.
Identifying emerging trends and events in this data and highlighting these stories on AOAV’s social media platforms.
Designing innovative and engaging content based on data analysis, such as infographics.
Publishing monthly updates based on data analysis and writing news stories based on the data.
Assisting in the preparation of presentations and events to disseminate the research findings.
Working with partners to highlight armed violence hotspots.
Editing and reviewing research reports written by the weapons team.
Providing general research assistance to AOAV’s Policy and Investigations team as needed, including helping with funding bids and briefing notes.

Qualifications
We anticipate applications will be mainly from people with a degree in a relevant field such as International Relations, Diplomacy, Development or Humanitarianism, but candidates with a background in economics or other data orientated degrees will be strongly considered.
Good knowledge of current affairs, conflict and humanitarian issues and interest in developing a more specialist knowledge in these fields.
Excellent written communication skills and fluency in English language.
Additional languages an advantage (particularly Spanish)
Outstanding attention to detail.
Knowledge of, and interest and experience in, working with data, large datasets, and statistical analysis.
Strong computer skills, particularly Microsoft Word and Excel. Ability to work with technical data and quantitative analysis. Knowledge of online content management systems and proficiency in communications using social media an advantage.
Knowledge of, and interest in, social media advocacy including Twitter and in video blogs.
Knowledge of WordPress and InDesign would be an asset.
Knowledge of Arabic would be an asset but this should not dissuade other applicants.

This role is an important one in AOAV’s research work and so we would only seek applications from people with a long term commitment to working in the humanitarian field. The candidate must also be prepared to work on subject matter that may be distressing. There may be occasional travel, but this work is largely desk based.
