Job summary
Under the direct supervision of the Transport Supervisor, drives and maintains a vehicle in support of the High Commission of Canada. Maintains the vehicle and provides assigned assistance to other sections as required.


Area of Selection

This position is open to candidates who are currently resident in the UK, who hold current documentation allowing them to work in the UK, who meet all of the Essential requirements stated below, and whose applications are received by the closing date. Those candidates holding documentation/visas not renewable in the UK such as the Youth Mobility Visa will not be eligible to apply for this position. The High Commission of Canada does not reimburse any travel costs to and from interview nor does it reimburse any relocation costs. The High Commission of Canada does not sponsor work permit applications on behalf of candidates.

Essential Qualifications

Screening: Candidates will initially be screened on the essential qualifications below and must demonstrate in their cover letter how they meet these criteria. Only those candidates who meet all the Essential Requirements will proceed to the next stage of the process.
Experience

Education: GCSE O’ Level or equivalent
Experience: Minimum 2 years ** experience in a Driver/Chauffeur capacity
Excellent navigational and route planning skills and knowledge of regional and national road networks. Must be medically fit and have a full UK/EU Driving Licence.

** 1 years continuous experience within last 5 years.

A medical assessment will be required to ensure fitness prior to any offer of employment made
A driving test will be administered
Rated Requirements

Assessment: Candidates must also meet the Rated Requirements shown below, which will be assessed through any of the following: written test, oral communication, interview and reference checks.
Abilities and Skills
Must be able to calculate driving time to ensure arrival at destination on time.
Ability to use Microsoft i.e. email
Ability to work effectively within a small team
Ability to work under pressure
Ability to follow relevant safety regulations and risk assess own vehicle
Ability to be motivated and committed to maintaining high standards
Knowledge
Must be well versed in the UK Highway Code, Traffic Regulations and Law pertaining to motor vehicles
Proficient Map Reader

Be organised and be able to prioritize and multi-task
Have clear communication skills with an ability deploy tact and diplomacy when necessary
Asset Qualifications

The High Commission has the right to further screen on Asset Qualifications and as such, preference may be given to candidates who have the following asset qualifications. Candidates should also clearly demonstrate in their cover letter if they meet these qualifications.
Trained in Advanced Driving Techniques (i.e. evasive, defensive and counter-terrorism).
Several years’ experience as driver/Chauffeur
Able to make running repairs to vehicles
Intimate knowledge of routes within Greater London and the location of British Government Offices, Foreign Embassies/High Commission’s, routes to all main airports.
Conditions of employment

Hours of work will be 37.5 per week, worked Monday to Friday at time to be arranged by the supervisor. Any job offer is subject to receipt of satisfactory employment and character references and the ability to obtain and maintain an Enhanced Reliability security screening (including a criminal record check).
Copies of educational qualifications will be required at the interview stage of the process. Successful candidate must have a valid passport and the required documentation allowing the right to work in the UK. Documentation will be required.
Operational Requirements

Available to work overtime either late evenings or weekends.
Training will be given in Advanced Driving and Anti Hijack Techniques
