About the Role

Adam Smith International continues to strengthen its in-house capacity through appointing a Global Security and Risk Manager. You will lead on Adam Smith International’s development and implementation of Duty of Care (DoC) solutions that enable projects to overcome safety and security challenges and allow us to operate confidently and professionally in ever more insecure areas, minimizing risk to the safety of our personnel.

This is a varied and challenging role overseeing the risk and security on our projects in over 30 countries including many high threat locations such as Afghanistan, Somalia, Northern Nigeria and Pakistan.

Working closely with Adam Smith International’s Duty of Care Committee, you will:
Develop “big picture” strategic solutions for how Adam Smith International provides DoC to staff and plan to build capabilities within the company;
Identify gaps in Adam Smith International’s safety and security policies and develop solutions coherent with existing DoC procedures and wider company policies and engage regularly with the company directors as the company develops;
Communicating the policies to all staff, and ensuring full and effective implementation in all the
countries where Adam Smith International works;
Provide guidance and strategic oversight to all operations overseas;
Assist in the co-ordination of crisis responses and medical evacuation of Adam Smith International personnel if required;
Co-ordinate and possibly deliver Hostile Environment Training (HEAT) for Adam Smith International staff.

Required Skills

As the Global Security and Risk Manager you should have proven abilities to build effective relationships with people from a wide range of professional and cultural backgrounds, and to work effectively in politically sensitive and challenging environments. You should relish working in a team, should be innovative, energetic, positive, and genuinely committed to achieving lasting change. Adam Smith International seeks the following skills:
Strong interpersonal skills to build and maintain relationships with managers in the field;
Knowledge of DFID, FCO, USAID, EU, and UN regulations is helpful;
Understanding of complex emergencies, related security concerns, and appropriate responses to such emergencies;
Eligibility to work in UK. Required Experience
A good degree;
Security risk management experience and civil sector background;
Experience of working overseas or repeated experience of working on operations overseas in a post conflict country;
Some UK experience in a military/security/ intelligence organisation preferred;
Demonstrated experience of initiative, an entrepreneurial mind-set, client-orientation, risk taking, and working in complex and time-pressured contexts.
