This is a Military Support Function (MSF) post. Posts are designated MSF when particular skills, competencies and military knowledge are required. Ideally the post should be filled by an individual who has achieved Service staff qualifications and has commanded a sub unit.


The Safety and Security (C1 MSF) Team Leader is a Reserved Post. The successful applicant will be required to undergo Developed Vetting, a process that may take up to 6 months to complete. The post holder will report to the Assistant Head Support to Operations.

The Safety and Security Team (who are members of the Support to Operations team) is based at the Permanent Joint Headquarters (PJHQ) in Northwood. The team provides the formal deployment and risk management framework for MOD civilians deploying in support of military operations and travelling to fragile locations.

The Safety & Security team are responsible for ensuring that all MOD and MOD sponsored civilians (including VIPs) deploying to or visiting operational or fragile areas (current and future) receive the appropriate package of preparation including training, risk management briefing and equipment to ensure they can deliver their effect with the minimum of risk.

The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate excellent interpersonal, time-management and multi-tasking skills, and an in depth awareness of operational risk and personal safety and security issues. A determination to deliver and attention to detail is essential.

Candidates should be able to demonstrate recent experience (ideally Combat Arms /Combat Support Arms or similar) in operational theatres and in depth experience of security/force protection measures. They will be expected to work alongside and advise military colleagues (on civilian risk management) as well as representatives from Other Government Departments.

The successful candidate will join the S2O Safety & Security Team, reporting to the Assistant Head. He or she will have responsibility for conducting reviews of in-theatre security assessments, providing expert advice to deployees and MOD senior managers, and assisting with the implementation of S2O policies and processes.

The successful candidate will be required to make duty trips to operational theatres therefore any offer will be conditional on the applicant passing pre-deployment health and recruitment checks.
