Salary:  £58,674

Job description
The Sovereign Base Areas Police (SBAP) provides civil policing to the Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia, a British Overseas Territory administered by the Ministry of Defence. The SBA covers an area of 98 square miles of the island of Cyprus and encompasses a resident Cypriot population of around 12,000; plus around 8,000 military and Civil Service personnel and their families; and a significant number of tourists throughout the year. The Force is around 250 strong and comprises two Divisions delivering intelligence led community based policing. The Force has its own CID, Firearms Unit, Marine Unit and Community Action Team and you will be supported by a small team of senior British Police Officers. By the nature of its duties and responsibilities, the Force has a close working relationship with British Forces Cyprus and the Republic of Cyprus Police.

The Chief Constable commands the force and is based at Episkopi Garrison. To succeed in this post, you will need to demonstrate confidence as a leader, a strategic planning perspective, and the ability to build and lead teams in a demanding environment. Sound judgement and the ability to negotiate and influence others are also essential attributes. You will need to have the ability to embrace and manage change, to work with diverse cultures, and be able to demonstrate an innovative and dynamic approach to policing and police management. You should have practical experience of operational police command at a senior level, including the policing of civil emergencies, investigations, and counter terrorist contingency planning. The post will require you to build up a strong understanding and be comfortable working in a complex political and cultural environment, and engage positively across communities and interest groups, Republic of Cyprus Police and other organisations. Proven media skills would be an advantage.

The Chief Constable is also the Superintendent of Prisons, responsible for ensuring the security and effective management of HM Prison Dhekelia. You will ensure that an effective business plan is in place to progress all aspects of the prison department, delivering to agreed standards and providing effective control over its direction and resources. Through your leadership you will create a climate that motivates prison staff and promotes a culture of constant improvement for the benefit and welfare of people within their care.

The successful candidate must be able to adapt to local conditions, which include long periods of very hot weather and have the ability to work with English speaking Greek and Turkish Cypriot officers. You should have recently served or still be serving with the UK Civil Police, or similar force overseas, at a broadly equivalent level to the position applied for. Experience of working with HM Forces or overseas would be an advantage but is not essential.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to operate in a unique and challenging police environment and make a significant contribution to the strategic direction and continuing professional development of the Force. You will also have the opportunity to enjoy the many delights that living in Cyprus has to offer.
